How to clean up in case of lamp breakage

In case a Fluorescent lamp is cracked or broken, please follow these rules to handle the lamp breakage:

  • Stay CALM as a fluorescent lamp contains only a very small amount of mercury.
  • Be careful not to get hurt by broken glass fragments.
  • Make sure to disconnect the power to avoid the risk of electric shock.
  • Gather up the fragments of the lamp, sweeping them up if possible.
  • Use a disposable towel or sticky tape to remove small pieces or dust.
  • Use a vacuum cleaner only if the surface leaves no alternative (carpet).
Dispose of the vacuum bag containing the lamp fragments.
  • Remove the fragments of the lamp from the inside of your home, i.e. by placing them in a bag and carrying them outside.
  • Ventilate the room.
  • Dispose of both cracked and non-functioning lamps correctly.

Disposal of lamp at its end of life

  • Lamps containing mercury must be disposed of properly to minimize their environmental impact.
  • In Europe, manufacturers set up systems to collect and recycle discharge lamps, including compact fluorescent lamps, following the WEEE Directive[1].
  • Lamps are marked with a crossed out wheelie bin, indicating that they shall not be disposed of with regular waste. End consumers shall return their lamps to municipal collection points.
  • Recycling rates for professionally used lamps are already satisfactory, as professional facility managers are aware of the need for recycling .
